Ted Sent In Info on Slope Flying at Lake Okeechobee in Florida

Hello Greg, I have been soaring the only site I knew of near Lake Okeechobee until I saw your links. I put together a web page describing it for anyone interested in it.

Just wanted to let you know of a new site for Florida flyers. I found your website a week ago, and saw your “Flying site” section for Florida, and clicked on it to find a site right down the street from me! WOW!….In flat Florida!

I have been soaring the only site I knew of near Lake Okeechobee until I saw your links. I put together a web page describing it for anyone interested in it. I have been flying R/C for 25 yrs, Hang gliding for 10yrs and slope flying for about a year. I am now an R/C slope junkie, bigtime.

Please link my site to your flying site section to benefit any other FL flyers that are looking for somewhere to fly.

Thanks for the great site.

  1. Is the site near Clewiston (south side) or elsewhere? Anyone ever try around Pahokee (Airport) Couldnt find links to location (mapquest)

  2. Any detailed maps to help us locate this site? I am guessing it would have to be on the east side of the lake. There are a lot of levees in South Florida that might also serve as small slope sites. The South Florida Water Management District manages most of these. Don’t know about access.

  3. Sorry guys,
I am the one who posted this years ago. I haven’t been to this website for awhile. The old link is dead cause geo cities shut down. The slope site is still there.
It is in South bay off of US 27 at the south bay camp ground.
There is also a large boat launch where all the fishermen set off to fist Lake Okeechobee. The top of the dike is paved, and goes around the lake for quite some miles. I have been meaning to go back, but am recently married, back from Israel, and with a baby on the way! Oh well.
This site is quite good with thermals cranking through the black cane dirt from the nearby cane fields.
I have taken my Zagi to the clouds there. Lots of room to land even big gliders on the back side of the berm. No one bothers you aside from the curious on looker.
here is a link to the site of the campground, and to the right you will see a link to google maps for directions.
Take a look at the satellite view, and look for the water plant. we flew the dike right in front of the little “L” shaped retention pond.

    Cheers
    Ted
